Green Striped Crookneck Cushaw winter squash is a remarkable heirloom variety that bridges the gap between summer and winter gardening. With its distinctive curved neck and striking green striped pattern, this squash is as visually impressive as it is delicious. Unlike summer squash varieties, Cushaw stores beautifully and provides nutritious meals well into the colder months, making it a valuable addition to any vegetable garden.

Planting and Growing Conditions
Green Striped Crookneck Cushaw requires a longer growing season than summer squash, so plant seeds directly in the garden after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Space plants 4 to 5 feet apart to allow room for vigorous vine growth. These plants thrive in full sun and rich, well-draining soil amended with compost or aged manure.
Water deeply and consistently, especially during flowering and fruit development. Mulch around the base of plants to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. The vines will spread considerably, so plan accordingly or use trellising if space is limited. Flowering typically occurs 6 to 8 weeks after planting, followed by fruit development.
Harvesting at Peak Maturity

Cure the squash by placing it in a warm, well-ventilated location for 7 to 10 days. This hardens the skin further and extends storage life significantly. Once cured, store in a cool (50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit), dry location away from direct sunlight.
